# Creating and selling gift cards

You can add a gift card product to sell gift cards with multiple different values on your storefront.

After you create a gift card product, you can manage the details of existing gift card products from the [**Products**](https://admin.shopify.com/products) page in your Shopify admin.

### Gift card product denominations <a href="#gift-card-product-denominations" id="gift-card-product-denominations"></a>

Gift card product values are known as denominations. A gift card product's denomination can be set to any amount greater than zero, up to a maximum of $10,000 USD or equivalent in your local currency.

Gift card denominations can't be set to an empty value, and customers can't input a custom amount for a gift card from your online storefront. If a customer wants to buy a gift card online for a value that isn't for sale on your online store, then you can instead create a [draft order](https://help.shopify.com/manual/orders/create-orders) for the custom amount. After the customer pays the invoice, you can [create a gift card](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/gift-card-products/issue-gift-card) with that custom amount, and then send it to the customer.

When you first create a gift card product, there are multiple default denominations generated in your store currency. You can replace the default denomination amounts with any other valid amount. To change the number of available denominations, click **Add denomination** to add an additional denomination, or click the trash can icon to delete a denomination. A gift card product must have at least one denomination.

### Add a new gift card product <a href="#add-a-gift-card-product" id="add-a-gift-card-product"></a>

After you create a gift card product, it's added to the **Products** section of your Shopify admin. Gift cards are digital products, and share [product details](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/details) with non-gift card products.

**Steps:**

1. From your Shopify admin, go to **Products** > [**Gift cards**](https://admin.shopify.com/gift_cards).
2. Click **Add a gift card product**.
3. Enter the gift card product information into the following fields:
   * **Title** - Enter a name for this gift card product. For example: <kbd>Birthday gift card</kbd>.
   * **Description** - Enter a description of this gift card product to display on your store.
   * **Media** - Upload product media, such as an image. Product media is displayed on the product page of your online store.
   * **Search engine listing preview** - This is a preview of how your gift card product might be displayed in search engine results.
   * **Sales channels and apps** - View and change the [availability settings](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/details#product-status) to publish the gift card and sell it through your sales channels. You can click the calendar icon beside **Online store** to [set a specific publishing date](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/shopify-admin/productivity-tools/future-publishing#set-a-publish-date-for-a-product).
   * **Organization** - You can add optional information about the product type and vendor, [add the gift card product to existing manual collections](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/gift-card-products/add-update-gift-card-products#add-the-gift-card-product-to-a-collection), and [add tags](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/shopify-admin/productivity-tools/using-tags).
4. Optional: Make any adjustments to the number of gift card denominations and their values.
5. When you're done, click **Save gift card product** to create a new gift card product.

After your gift card product is saved, you're redirected to the gift card's product details page. You can add any additional product details, or make changes to the gift card product.

After you fulfill an order with a gift card product, a gift card is created with the value of the purchased gift card. This gift card is listed in the **Gift cards** section of your Shopify admin. You can [view, organize, or edit created gift cards](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/gift-card-products/manage-purchased-gift-cards) from the [**Gift cards**](https://admin.shopify.com/gift_cards) page in your Shopify admin.

### Update a gift card product <a href="#update-a-gift-card-product" id="update-a-gift-card-product"></a>

2. Click the gift card listing for the gift card that you want to update.
3. In the section with the gift card code and **Expiry date**, click the pencil icon.
4. Select **Gift cards expire**, and then set the new expiration details for the gift card.
5. Click **Save**.

### Update gift card product denominations <a href="#update-gift-card-product-denominations" id="update-gift-card-product-denominations"></a>

Each gift card denomination is saved as a unique variant of the gift card product. You can add denominations to your gift card by [adding a new variant](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/variants/add-variants). You can also add or edit additional product variant details such as SKUs, barcodes, and variant images for each denomination from the product details page or variant details page in your Shopify admin.

Learn more about [adding variants](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/variants/add-variants) and [editing variants](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/variants/edit-variants).

### Add a gift card product to a collection <a href="#add-the-gift-card-product-to-a-collection" id="add-the-gift-card-product-to-a-collection"></a>

You can add gift card products to a [manual collection](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/collections/manual-shopify-collection) or a [smart collection](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/collections/automated-collections).
